The HGM Trimming Guidelines

HGM Trimming Guidelines:
We always bevel to the horse’s white line from heel quarter to heel quarter (at 20 degrees), unless there is a ridge, at which time we bevel to just outside the ridge – or plateau, if there is one.  We blend up to the heel through the heel quarter, in a nice “ramp”, (see photo below).  We always take both heels down to 1/4 inch above the sole (rasping them flat and never beveled), if they are higher than that. If they are already lower than 1/4 inch above the sole, we always take the heel that is highest above the sole, down to match the lower one – in height above the sole - being sure to trim ONE heel only.
